Waite, following Mathers' approach to dividing the suits into Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles, did not explicitly specify their elemental essence. However, in his interpretation of the Arcanum I (The Magician), he does acknowledge this nature, as in his modified version of The Magician card, four symbols of the Minor Arcana are clearly present on the table before The Magician.
The pyramidal castle on the elevation depicted in the background is the only indirect hint that Waite left in the image of the Ace of Wands. This castle resembles a vertical triangle, symbolizing the hieroglyph of the Fire element.
