In the Golden Dawn tradition, the card is known as the Lord of Disappointment in Pleasure. This card corresponds to the first decan of Scorpio, where Mars is in Scorpio, its natural planetary ruler.
Similar to the Five of Wands, Mars rules the fifth card, corresponding to the fifth Sephirah on the Tree of Life and the planetary magic square of 5 × 5. The figure in the cloak resembles the hermit from Arcanum IX, but the black color of the cloak expresses the Saturnine (and Binah) sorrow.
The figure lost in contemplation symbolizes a lack of pleasure, focused on the empty cups in front, ignoring the abundance behind.
The river behind the cloaked figure is present in many cards, but here, it is the same river as in Arcanum XIII - Death; both cards are ruled by Scorpio.
