The World card in Tarot corresponds to the Hebrew letter Tau, which is the only point of agreement between the exoteric French Kabbalistic tradition and the esoteric English school.
Both traditions conclude the Tarot with the World card, which is identified with the letter Tau and astrologically linked to Saturn. In the Golden Dawn system, Tau is attributed to the Earth element, while Aleph, Mem, and Shin correspond to Air, Water, and Fire, respectively.
The secret Saturnine meaning of Tau in the French tradition remains undisclosed, although Oswald Wirth associates it with the Pole Star and the conjunction of the Sun with Jupiter. Arthur Waite demonstrates the connection between Saturn and the Earth element with Tau in the following way:
The planetary symbol for Saturn, which is a cross with a crescent, is depicted in the image of the dancer. Her legs and shawl form the symbol of Saturn, where the violet-colored shawl symbolizes Tau as Saturn in the Golden Dawn tradition.
The four figures in the corners of the picture symbolize the four elements of the world, where Earth is the fourth element. The name of the card itself, The World, also alludes to Earth.
The oval wreath on the card represents the Akasha-Tattva, associated with the planet Saturn and the color violet.
The shape of the wreath resembles the symbol of zero, hinting at the cyclical nature of the Tarot path, starting with the Fool (Arcanum 0) and ending with the World (Arcanum XXI), signifying that the end returns to the beginning, and the beginning meets the end.
The World card in Tarot embodies Gaia, the ancient Greek goddess of the Earth, who provides sustenance and support to all of humanity.
It also represents the feminine aspect of Saturn, adorned with a victory wreath, symbolizing her understanding of the importance of responsibility and her ability to impose limitations on herself. As a karmic goddess of retribution, she rewards those who have earned her favor.
Personifying the cosmic dancer, she acknowledges and reveals her true essence, performing the dance of life and existence.
This card is also a symbol of a person who takes responsibility for managing their inner world, their microcosm, and recognizes their place and role in the broader context of life.
The World card represents the culmination and culmination of the Major Arcana, symbolizing the end and perfection of the Universe, as well as the deep understanding of the soul about its place in the Divine order.
It reflects a state of spiritual enlightenment and realization of unity with God.
On a macrocosmic level, the World card carries many messages. It depicts the world in its recreated, perfected form, where the laws of nature reach their highest expression.
It also symbolizes the beautiful beginning of all existence when the Universe was declared good, and joy filled all beings.
Some interpretations see the central figure of the card as a great magician who has reached the zenith of their spiritual development, but this interpretation can be disputed. Others believe that the card symbolizes the absolute, which also raises doubts.
The idea that the card embodies Truth is more accurately related to the seventeenth card - the Star. The World card is sometimes also called the Crown of the Magi, emphasizing its significance as a symbol of the highest achievement and spiritual fulfillment.
The World card, also known as the Cosmos or Universe, embodies the forces of Saturn in the image of a graceful dancer. This card symbolizes full self-awareness and readiness to take responsibility for realizing one's potential.
The wreath on the card, adorned with symbols of infinity, signifies the completion of a cycle and the beginning of a new path. Just as the zero on the Fool card represents a new beginning, the World emphasizes the transition from the end of one stage to the beginning of another, bringing new opportunities and experiences.
In the hands of the dancer are two wands, symbolizing harmony between the conscious and subconscious, indicating the achievement of inner balance and perfection. Life becomes a dedication to higher goals, teachers, or ideals.
The card's number, XXI (21), speaks of achieving harmony between the personal and Divine essence, returning to the world as a renewed, self-aware individual. The number one (1) in this context reflects the spiritual path of life, uniting human will with the Divine.
