Last Quarter

A little space to reset.

Last quarter, also called third quarter, falls roughly three quarters of the way through the lunar cycle. About half the visible disc is illuminated, and that area will continue to shrink. The next part of the cycle is the waning crescent.

LOOK UP

When can you see it?

Late night and morning

The last quarter Moon typically rises around midnight and sets around midday. It can be a familiar sight on a clear morning, even after the Sun is up. Its orientation depends on where you are observing from; the phase itself is shared worldwide.

Are “third quarter” and “last quarter” different phases?

They are two names for the same phase. “Third quarter” counts progress through the whole cycle, while “last quarter” points to the final quarter of the journey before the next new Moon.
