Waning Crescent

A softer close to the cycle.

The waning crescent is the final phase before the next new Moon. Less than half the visible face is lit, and the crescent becomes thinner as the days pass. The cycle is closing, but the Moon continues its journey around Earth without stopping.

When can you see it?

Before sunrise, towards the east

Try looking towards the eastern sky before sunrise, with a clear view of the horizon. The thinnest crescent can be hard to distinguish in dawn light. Its exact position and tilt change with your location, the season and the time of observation.

How can I tell it from a waxing crescent?

Both are thin crescents, but they belong to opposite ends of the cycle. A waxing crescent is associated with the evening sky after new Moon; a waning crescent appears in the morning before the next new Moon.
