Waxing Gibbous

Growing into the light.

Between first quarter and full Moon, the illuminated area expands beyond half the disc. This rounded shape is called gibbous. It may look nearly full towards the end of the phase, but a narrow edge of shadow still reveals that the cycle is moving towards its brightest point.

When can you see it?

Afternoon into the night

The waxing gibbous Moon generally rises before sunset and remains visible well into the night. Compare its outline on consecutive evenings: the dark edge becomes narrower. Weather, the horizon and your latitude affect what you can actually see.

Can a Moon that looks full still be waxing gibbous?

Yes. Our eyes do not always pick out a very thin strip of shadow. A calendar identifies the exact full Moon event, while the Moon can appear almost round on the days around it.
